PROGRAM_ABSTRACT_BEG
The project will probe water in the lunar interior by making spatially resolved maps of central peaks of 15 large craters on the Moon using 3 micron spectroscopy with SpEX operated as a pushbroom spectrometer. Central peaks arise from rebound of the lunar crust during an impact event and contain material from deep inside the Moon, in some cases potentially sampling the lunar mantle. Spacecraft measurements have detected anomalous water abundances at some of these features, but technical issues with the data permit large uncertainties. SpEX data can be used to control these uncertainties.
