The SpEX observations proposed would collect data from 1.7 to 4 microns of large lunar craters to probe the water content of the lunar crust. There is an existing hypothesis that the lower portion of the lunar crust, that is exposed in the central peaks of large craters, may be hydrated: this project will test the hypothesis. Previous observations of the Moon with SpEX have demonstrated the feasibility of determining water contents using 3 micron observations of the Moon.
