Spectra were obtained of Comet 17P/Holmes on Oct. 27, 28 and 31, 2007 UT using SpeX on the NASA IRTF. On each night, spectra were recorded in two modes: SXD (Short Cross-Dispersed) covering the wavelength interval 0.8 - 2.5 microns, and LXD-1.9 (Long Cross-Dispersed) covering the interval 1.9 - 4.2 microns. For all of the observations, a 0.3 x 15 arcsecond slit was used, resulting in a spectral resolution of R ~ 2000. The slit was always oriented in the N-S direction. For calibration of the spectra, observations of the A0V star BS1261 (Vmag ~ 4.3) were interspersed with the comet observations. The star data were taken with the standard nod distance of 7.5 arcseconds, with the star appearing on the slit in both the A and B beam positions. A set of flat field and Argon arc lamp images were taken after each set of star observations. For the comet, the nod distance was consistantly set to 10 arcminutes East, so that the comet photocenter appears centered in the slit in only the A-beam images, and the B-beam images measure sky outside of the central coma. On Oct. 27 and 28, the sky conditions were relatively clear, with only occasional light cirrus. On Oct 31, the sky was clear.Precipitable water was low on all three nights: CSO tau (225 GHz) averaged about 0.050 on 27 Oct, about 0.040 on 28 Oct, and about 0.055 on 31 Oct. BROAD-BAND IMAGES: On Oct 31, in addition to the spectral data, images of the comet were taken through Mauna Kea J-band (1.164 - 1.326 microns), K-band (2.027 - 2.363 microns) and L'-band (3.424 - 4.124 microns) filters. In each filter, 9 A-B image pairs were taken, where the telescope was nodded 10 arcminutes East for sky (in the B beam), and the position was dithered approximately 5 arcsec between each pair to form a 3 x 3 grid of offset images. Data were also obtained of the A0 star HD 22686 (an Elias Infrared standard star). For the star, 5 dithered A-B image pairs were taken. J, K, L' magnitudes for this star are: J = 7.197, K = 7.186 (from Guetter et al (2003) AJ 125:3344), and L' = 7.199 (from Leggett et al (2003) MNRAS 345:144). BEWARE: The file name prefix and running image numbers used for the images taken on Oct 31 were the same as those used for the spectra taken that night (filename = comet. and file numbers begin with 3001). Sorry about that. The raw, unprocessed images from SpeX (both spectra and images from guidedog) are contained in four subdirectories. Tar files of these directories are also provided to allow for easier download. Abridged versions of the logsheets for all four datasets (3 nights of spectra, 1 night of images) are provided below. These data are available for public use.
