Our Scientific Organising Committee is composed by the four organisers plus: Erik Asphaug (Santa Cruz University (Ca), USA) Alberto Cellino (Osservatorio Astronomico di Torino, Italy) Kevin Housen (Boeing Corporation, Washington, USA) Akiko Nakamura (Japanese Space Agency, ?? Japan) [PLEASE BOBBY, CHECK AFFILIATIONS] *** Scientific Programme: As in the the tradition of CD workshops spirit, this meeting aims to gather most of the people working on all topics related with collisions between small Solar System bodies: laboratory experiments, internal structures, rotations, binaries, asteroid families, numerical modelling, etc. A number of specialists, young researchers and students in this area will have the opportunity to present their work and -especially- widely discuss these topics. The workshop has been designed to develop in 4 days, with seven half-day sessions, three social events, and one free afternoon. The format of the meeting is such that the pace shall be relatively relaxed and stimulate open discussion, which is the most characteristic part of this kind of meetings. In order to allow fruitful discussion and be able to fit into the conference hall, the number of participants will be limited to about 75. Participation of young researchers (including Ph.D. students) in the field is strongly encouraged as a source of fresh ideas. There will be no poster session. Contributed talks will have 20' plus 10' for questions and discussion, and invited reviews (IR) will have 40-45' + 10-15' for discussion. In this way we will have a dozen invited reviews and some 20 contributed talks. It will be possible to set up some "back to back" communications (both for IR and contributed talks) if the topics are strictly related and the authors agree. Scientific sessions: Impact experiments Observations I (ground-based) and II (spacecraft rendez-vous) Strength, scaling-laws and theoretical studies Internal structure and composition Rotations and binaries Numerical models Asteroid families and collisional evolution Confirmed invited speakers: Akira Fujiwara (...) Keith Holsapple (...) Guy Consolmagmo (...) Erik Asphaug (Santa Cruz University (Ca, USA)) Derek Richardson (...) Alberto Cellino (Osservatorio Astronomico di Torino (Italy)) Don Davis (Planetary Science Institute, Tucson (Ar, USA)) The detailed schedule will be available within the third announcement (May, 2007). *** Schedule: We have planned the following schedule for scientific sessions and social events: Monday 25th: 19:00 to 22:00: Welcoming reception at Hotel Spa Porta Maris Tuesday 26th: 9:15 Short presentation of the workshop, including logistic and tourstic last-minute tips, with NO speech by any authorities, hopefully. 9:30 - 11:00: 1st session 11:00 - 11:30: Coffee break 11:30 - 13:00: 1st session 13:00 - 16:00: Lunch and siesta 16:00 - 17:30: 2nd session 17:30 - 18:00: Coffee break 18:00 - 19:30: 2nd session Wednesday 27th: 9:30 - 11:00: 1st session 11:00 - 11:30: Coffee break 11:30 - 13:00: 1st session 13:30: Trip to Tabarca Island 14:30: Lunch Free afternoon. In order to properly organise this event, please let us know if your arrival time shall allow you to participate. We understand that this information will not be available until you close your travel plans, nevertheless this information will be welcome by the end of May. Wednesday 26th, 13:30: Trip to Tabarca Island by an absolutely safe hidrofoil ship (40' sailing) and lunch in a typical restaurant, eating "Caldero", a local speciality based on a local fish and a very good paella. Then free afternoon, with the possibility to go back to Alicante or stay the whole afternoon. The island is a natural reserve and it has many small beaches for sunbathing (take care, "Tabarca sun" is known for its special tanning power!), meditation and relaxation, swimming and to snorkeling, but fishing is forbidden in most of its coast's surroundings. This trip is recommended. Please state your intention to join in the "Social events grid" below. This is not compromising, it is just to have an idea of the number of interested people, but - again- we will need that you make up you mind by the end of May. Thursday 27th, 21:30: Conference dinner at a local restaurant. Please state your intention to join in the "Social events grid" below. This is not compromising, it is just to have an idea of the number of interested people, but - again- we will need that you make up you mind by the end of May. On Tuesday 26th or Friday 29th, around 20:00, at the downtown University Centre (10' walk form the Hotel), we would like to organise a divulgative talk about fragmentation phenomena or collisions in general, space missions to asteroids, or whatever related to the CD07 workshop. The speaker should be one of the non-local participants to the workshop, and the talk should be made in spanish (or spanglish, at least...). VOLUNTEERS ARE WANTED. Please let us know if you wish to. The talk will imply - at least - the exemption from paying the CD07 registration fee. Most of the social events will be free of charge. We will detail which ones are, once we have confirmation of funding by all our sponsors. Social events grid: I wish to participate to: Yes, probably No, probably No idea Trip to Tabarca: Conference Dinner: *** Location: Alicante is situated in the south-eastern coast of Spain, in the region called 'Comunidad Valenciana', on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. Founded by the Greeks (Akra Leuka) and dominated by the Romans (Lucentum), both cultures named it, in ancient times, 'the city of light', for the many days of sunshine per year. At present it is often known as 'the Spring's home' due to its mild weather, both in winter and in summer. You can know more about Alicante and have a look at it at http://www.alicante.es/ingles/, and the surroundings (http://fotos.euroresidentes.com/fotos/fotos_costa_blanca.htm). As a mediterranean town, Alicante has a multi-ethnic cultural and social life, with more than 300,000 dwellers and 140 different nationalities living together in good harmony. Alicante is the european province with the highest ratio of resident people from other european countries (around 10% of the total population). Alicante has a mid-size (for Spain) and modern university (http://www.ua.es/en/presentacion/index.html), with some 30,000 students. The Departamento de Fisica, Ingenieria de Sistema y Teoria de la Senal (Department of Physics, Systems Engeneering and Signal Theory) of the Universidad de Alicante is formally organizing this meeting. Our Department has a small research group in Astronomy and Astrophysics, composed by 7 members plus three undergraduate students. TOURISTIC ATTRACTIONS: Tens of kilometers of beaches are not the only touristic attraction of the 'Costa Blanca', as this part of the Mediterranean coast is named. Medieval history is present in town with two ancient castles (one in very good conditions: 'Santa Barbara' castle) and a few more within 50 km`distance. Roman rests are also present in town and in a 'villa' located in a pretty village only 15' far by a modern tram running north along the coast. It is also possible to visit the cute Tabarca island -a natural marine reserve- where one can escape from the crowd and traffic and taste the flavours of the local cuisine at less than one hour of sailing on the quiet Mediterranean Sea (http://www.alicante-ayto.es/medioambiente/rmtabarca.html). Altea, Benidorm, Guadalest, Benissa, Calpe, two natural grutes are just some of the places that can also be visited. Important tip: Since the 20th till the 24th of June the town lives a magic period with its main feast of the year: "Les Fogueres de San Juan", a traditional feast full of music, shows, noise and fire! If you mean to experience it, just let the hotel know how many nights you mean to extend your staying, they will keep the same fare if the extension is limited to a few days. *** Travel: The easiest way to reach Alicante from abroad is by plane. Alicante airport ("El Altet") is a busy airport, with a bunch of low-cost companies travelling from and to very many cities in Europe. Frequent connections with Madrid and Barcelona airports are available every day for passengers coming from outside Europe. Taxis from the airport will take you to the Hotel Spa Porta Maris for about 15 Euros. A bus is also running from/to the airport to downtown, at some 10' walk from the workshop hotel. As usual, the sooner you book your flights, the cheaper. Regular confortable trains also travel to Alicante from Madrid and Barcelona. (http://horarios.renfe.es/hir/ingles.html) A car is not really necessary for a one-week stay in Alicante, but if you like to drive, Alicante is connected by highway to the rest of Spain and Europe. You can easily rent a car at the airport or even downtown. The Spanish driving (and parking) style and traffic density is comparable (that is: not worse) than the Northern Italy or Southern French way. *** Accomodation: The workhop will be held at "HOTEL SPA PORTA MARIS" (http://www.hotelspaportamaris.com/home-ing.htm), one of the newest and best placed hotels in town (http://www.hotelspaportamaris.com/home-ing.htm). This is a "three stars" hotel, but keep in mind that Spanish standards in hotels are far better than in most other european countries (i.e.: typically a "three-stars" hotel in Spain is equivalent -but far cheaper- to a "four-stars" hotel in the rest of Europe). It offers "SPA" services (see rates in their web page). We have blocked 60 rooms at this hotel until March, the 26th, 2007. After this deadline, rates remain the same BUT availabilty is not granted. Rates: Double room: 103 Euros (+7% VAT). Single room: 89 Euros (+7% VAT). The "Hotel Spa Porta Maris" kindly applies the same rates to CD07 attendants who wish to stay a few days (3-4) before or after the workshop. Consider this unique possibility to live the "Fogueres de Sant Joan" lodged in a privileged site. Even if we strongly recommend to stay at this hotel, many other fine lodging options are available in the hotels downtown, if you just want to be on your own. If your budget for lodging is way below the rates above and you are not eligibile for a grant, please let us know and we will suggest you alternative accomodation. It is possible to have lunch at the hotel at a rate around 25 Euros, including drinks. It would be a fixed menu' (not buffet) changing every day. The Hotel will need to know which days you mean to have lunch at the Hotel a couple of weeks before the beginning of the workshop. (Please, remember we have scheduled the trip to Tabarca on wednesday 27th of June) Many restaurants and bars are in the touristic harbour, close to the hotel (5' walk), and downtown at a 10' walk (suitable for those colleagues used to walk under the summer sunshine at noon, around latitude 38º). Booking: You can book your room on your own at the Hotel Spa Porta Maris in three ways: a) Directly calling the Hotel (Telephone number: ++ 34 965...). b) Faxing them (++ 34 965...) the formatted booking form. c) E-mailing them ( ). You will need a credit card number for your booking, but you can pay by credit card, cash or in any other way you may agree with the Hotel itself. In order to enjoy the rates above, remember to state that you are attending the "CD07 Astronomy workshop". If you have any problem with that, please feel free to contact us (cd07@ua.es) Cancellation policy: The Hotel Spa Porta Maris will not charge you at all if you cancel your booking up to 48 hours before your expected check in. They shall charge you the first night if you cancel your booking within 48 hours from your expected check in. *** Abstracts: Abstract should not be more than one page, including pictures. They should include a title, the name of the author(s) and his/her(their) affiliation in bold font, and text in normal font. Please submit your abstracts in standard LaTeX form, without any "personal" style fonts, or using the template form you may find below (when available). [BOBBY, I WILL PROVIDE YOU THAT, AS SOON AS POSSIBLE] If you have trouble with that, please send your file as a plain text and we will take care of setting it into the suitable format.
