% GENERAL NOTES % % The proposal template for IRTF propsals for the Feb-July 2000 semester can be % retrieved from the IRTF Web page: % % http://irtf.ifa.hawaii.edu/userSupport/timeAppAnnounce1.html % % By clicking on the link, a tar file should be automatically downloaded to your % machine. The tar file can be unpacked with the following command: % % tar xvf timeapp2000.tar % % The tar file contains three individual files, which are generated by the above % command: % % README - these instructions % irtf_timeapp_2000.tex - the TeX template for the proposal % epsfirtf.sty - a style file needed for the proposal % % The file irtf_timeapp_2000.tex is a template IRTF proposal that should be % filled in and processed with TeX (NOT LaTeX!!!). It requires the style file % epsfirtf.sty, which should be downloaded with the template. The resulting % postscript file should be sent via FTP to the IRTF (see instructions below). % The IRTF secretary (hughes@irtf.ifa.hawaii.edu) will verify that the proposal % has been received and can be printed properly and will notify the submitter. % % FILLING OUT THE TEMPLATE % % The first ~200 lines of the template establishes a complete font environment % and sets up the layout of the proposal. The proposer should ignore these lines - % and SHOULD NOT ALTER THEM - and skip down to the first occurrence in the file of % the string %%%. All responses can be inserted in the template immediately after % each %%% or between pairs of %%%. % % The General guidelines section of the proposal can be deleted before submission. % % INCORPORATING FIGURES % % (Implementation of \plotone and \plottwo macros for plain TeX. % J. Heasley, Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawaii; % modifications by W. Vacca.) % % The simple macros \plotone and \plottwo allow one to incorporate encapsulated % Postscript graphics in plain TeX documents. They are based on the routines in % the epsf.sty file (the same as used in LaTeX implementations that do this sort % of thing). % % To plot a single encapsulated Postscript figure you call the macro \plotone as % follows: % % \plotone {150pt} {fig_1.ps} {Fig.~1. This is the caption.} % % The first argument {150pt} is the width to which the Postscript figure will be % scaled when included in the output. This is measured in points % (1 inch = 72 points). % % The second argument is the name of the Postscript file. The third argument is % the string for the figure caption which will be printed in a 10pt Roman font. % % The \plottwo command will produce two plots side-by-side with a space % between them. It works like the command of the same name in LaTeX % except that the user must specify the width of the figures. For example, % you would call this as % % \plottwo {150pt} {fig_2a.ps} {fig_2b.ps} {Another caption...} % % NB - The template assumes the original postscript figures are in PORTRAIT % format. If the proposer wishes to include a figure in LANDSCAPE format, % s/he will have to rotate the image by 90 degrees before attempting to % include it. % % % SUBMITTING THE PROPOSAL % % Once the proposer is certain that the proposal will run through TeX properly and % has created a postscript version, s/he can submit it to the IRTF. We ask that % the proposer rename his/her postscript file to be PIname.ps where PIname is % the last name of the PI. If a proposer submits multiple proposals, we ask that % s/he attach a number after the PIname. For example, if Vacca submits a proposal, % he should rename his postscript file to be Vacca.ps. If he submits three different % proposals, he should rename them to be Vacca_1.ps, Vacca_2.ps, and Vacca_3.ps. % % FTP the final renamed POSTSCRIPT version of the proposal to the IRTF with the % following commands: % % ftp irtf.ifa.hawaii.edu % log in as anonymous with your email ID as the password % cd pub/Proposal % bin % put PIname.ps % bye % % You will not be able to see any files on the ftp site (even the ones you have % submitted). % % The IRTF secretary Karan Hughes (hughes@irtf.ifa.hawaii.edu) will contact you by % e-mail to confirm that the proposal has been received and that it prints properly. % Do NOT send the original TeX files or any individual figures! Again, send ONLY the % single .ps file generated after processing the TeX file. % % % PROPOSALS FOR THE SPRING 2000 SEMESTER ARE DUE: 01 October 1999
