Call for Proposals for the
NASA Infrared Telescope Facility

Proposals for observing time on the NASA Infrared Telescope Facility for the February 1, 2005 through July 31, 2005 semester are due Friday, October 1, 2004, 5:00 P.M. Hawaii Standard Time.

See our web site for instructions. Please submit your proposals using the latest version (rev. Aug. 2004). Postscript or Portable Document Format (PDF) files may be submitted by anonymous FTP transfer to the IRTF following the instructions.

Please note that we allow only ONE PAGE of text for the Scientific Justification and one page for figures and tables.

We have a special Deep Impact mission support observing opportunity to observe the comet Tempel 1 impact event in July 2005. Please see /Documents/Tempel1_prop.pdffor more information.

Remote observing from Hilo, Hale Pohaku, or your own office is available with SpeX, NSFCAM and CSHELL. If you wish to observe from your home institution, you MUST comply with the requirements for video conferencing and instrument operation provided on the Remote Observers Information page. New users of SpeX, NSFCAM and CSHELL should plan to observe from the summit for their first run to work with their support astronomer and become familiar with the instrument operation. Observers already familiar with the instrument and who want to observe remotely from their home institution are strongly encouraged to contact Miranda Hawarden-Ogata ( to set up a test of the video link and user interface at least one month prior to their observing run. We cannot guarantee remote observing on short notice since we have no control of hardware and software compatibility on the user's side.

Observers should read the information on the current IRTF instrument complement and visitor instruments, available on a collaborative basis.

Facility instruments include: SpeX (1-5 micron spectrograph), NSFCAM (1-5 micron camera), and CSHELL (1-5 micron high-resolution spectrograph). NSFCAM is being upgraded to a 2k x 2k. Some imaging projects can be done with SpeX. See the SpeX web page for available filters and details. Note that the Adaptive Optics System will be available.

Other instruments that are available on a collaborative basis with the instrument team include: TEXES (5-20 micron high-resolution spectrograph; contact Matt Richter for more information), BASS (3-14 micron spectrometer; contact David Lynch at, CELESTE (5-25 micron echelle spectrometer; contact Don Jennings at, HIPWAC (9-12 micron heterodyne spectrometer; contact Ted Kostiuk at and MIRSI (8-26 micron camera; contact James Jackson at, or Eric Tollestrup at which is also available for remote observing. MIRSI proposers are encouraged, but not required, to collaborate with the MIRSI team. Publications resulting from the use of MIRSI shall include the MIRSI team as co-authors.
