FLOPPY DISKS

Sept., 1998

TO CHANGE TO THE ALTERNATE SET OF DRIVES:

Micro-Technology Inc.:

1. Turn off power to the TCS equipment rack.

2. Get the MicroTech floppy Q-bus card from the rack bin labeled "Floppy Controller". This is a 2-wide card with a black handle. Insert the MicroTech drive ribbon cable connector into the card edge connector. Observe correct polarity.

3. Remove the DEC floppy controller and connected cable. This is Module M8029. Plug the MicroTech card into the vacant slot.

4. Unplug the RXO2 drive assembly, in the power strip behind the rack. Plug in the MicroTech drive AC power.

5. Power up the system.

DEC RX02:

1. Turn off power to the TCS equipment rack.

2. Get the DEC floppy controller Q-bus card, module M8029. It should be in the circuit board rack. Insert the RX02 ribbon cable connector into the card connector observing correct polarity, red stripe to inside of card.

3. Remove the MicroTech Q-bus card and connected cable. Plug the DEC card into the vacant slot.

4. Unplug the MicroTech drive and plug in the RX02 assembly. (There is no on/off power switch on the DEC drives.)

5. Power up the system.

NOTES:

Do not leave the alternate floppy drive assembly powered up when off line. Pull the plug of the RX02. Turn the power switch off for the MicroTech drives or pull its plug.

The DEC floppy drives do not have head-loading lights or write protect detection.

The DEC floppy drive system can not format sector headers, only the data area. I formatted the diskettes in the box under the drives using the MicroTech drive. Use these diskettes for copying. I will bring more over, formatted on the Dataram LSI-11/23 in my office.

A separate 4-wide bootstrap card (BDV11) has been installed at the end of the Q-bus backplane in order to boot the RX02, which has no bootstrap on its interface card. The MicroTech interface has a jumper to enable bootstrapping. That is how we have been operating previously. Now, with the installation of the separate bootstrap card, I have disabled the bootstrap option on the MicroTech interface cards. To enable the bootstrap, see the jumpering instructions in the BDV11 document.
