2023 May 27 - TCS3 Pointing Run (T.Denault, D.Griep )

Goals
TCS3 pointing run. (1st half of night, Fri 05/27/2023, 18:35pm-00:05am)
Last one was done on 2022-07-08.

1. Encoder Measurement

* DID NOT: Asked DayCrew to clean/inspect gears/encoders/tachometer.
  DW on vacation.

2. Setup. How is the tcs servo performance?

Had daytime observing, took this tracking sample at 16:30. iSHELL was ON.
Tracking is OK. Following error range is HA 0.146, Dec 0.056.
230527-tcs_mcc_graph1.png (Best I saw was 0.123, 0.055)

- Collimate and balance are set. Hexapod is used.
- Spex is in the center. (instrument change/balance started at 18:37)
Sunset at 6:53.

3. Benchmark current TCS

Start at 19:06
Using current TCS version v230508.
Pattern: benchmark13

tpoint file: b1.dat
.ape file: b1.ape

Done at 19:36. 30 min to take data.
(slow due to slow west slews, and slower dome speed).

4. Pointing Run

Using TCS to new version v230508 (no changes, using same encoder ratios).

Starting at 19:45 - using GRID w/ 70 stars
Done taking data at 20:56 .. about 1hr 15 min.

tpoint file: point.dat
.ape file: point.ape

used all data, RMS = 14.64
Removed #7, RMS = 13.95
Removed #1, RMS = 13.36
Removed #12, RMS = 12.69
Removed #6, RMS = 11.86

Adjusted data file is: point-adj.dat

tpoint.log - log of fit using point-adj.dat
point.ps
point.pdf - tpoint graphs (postscript and PDF)
point_coeff.txt - resulting coefficients.

Updated .tcs-init with new coefficients
# coefficients from 2023/05/27 pointing run:

5. B2 benchmark

Doing benchmark "b2" with new coefficients
Started at 21:29... finished at 21:59 (30 mins)
tpoint file: b2.dat
.ape file: b2.ape

Now, let's compare the 2 benchmarks:

Here is a graph of HA error of b1.dat vs b2.dat

   gnuplot to make the graphs:
plot 'b1.ape' using 10 with linespoints title 'b1 HA pt.madj'
replot 'b2.ape' using 10 with linespoints title 'b2 HA pt.madj'

Here is a graph of DEC error of b1.dat vs b2.dat

   gnuplot to make the graphs:
plot 'b1.ape' using 11 with linespoints title 'b1 Dec pt.madj'
replot 'b2.ape' using 11 with linespoints title 'b2 Dec pt.madj'

Finished at 22:05.

6. Conclusion

Point run when well. Most slew target fell in the field of view.

New coefficients look about the same as the current map.
HA no improvement in the benchmark graph.
DEC shape is the same, slightly worst offset error.

Mostly did the pointing run so we do it at least once a semester, not because the pointing was bad.
Will keep the new map.

Finisted at 22:20, took 3.5 hrs.
