Cshell Staff Startup Instructions
CSHELL refers to the CSHELL Instrument. CSHELL run in VNC 07.
GUIDER refers to the CSHELL Guider. The GUIDER runs in VNC 08.
CSHELL is normall powered up, with the IC, XUI, and DV running on CSHELLpc in
a VNC window in stefan. The TO are require to start the guider IC & GUI.
Staff instruction for establishing an VNC session: Using VNC with the IRTF
0. Cshell and Guider VNC
Normally vnc session 07 (for cshell) and 08 (for the guider) are running on stefan.
Connect to the vnc sessions.
Problems?
Use vnc -show to see if the vnc session are running.
Use vnc -kill cshell -d N to kill a session (N is 7 or 8).
To start a VNC sesstion for the cshell user: vnc -start cshell .
Note: both 7 & 8 must not exist, as start run the session in pairs.
1. Starting the Software
1.1 Starting the CSHELL software
Connect to vnc session: vncviewer stefan.ifa.hawaii.edu:07 .
Create 3 xterms in the VNC session and start the IC, XUI, and DV.
IC:
stefan> ssh cshellpc -l cshell
cshellpc> startic
XUI:
stefan> ssh cshellpc -l cshell
cshellpc> startxui
DV:
stefan> ssh cshellpc -l cshell
cshellpc> startdv
Or use the openwin menus to accomplish the same thing:
CSHELL->IC
CSHELL->XUI
CSHELL->DV
1.2 Starting the GUIDER software
Connect to vnc session: vncviewer stefan.ifa.hawaii.edu:08 .
Create 3 xterms in the VNC session and start the IC, XUI, and DV.
GIC:
stefan> rlogin casspc -l guider
GXUI:
stefan> ssh planck gxui
GDV:
stefan> ssh planck dv -p 30122
Or use the openwin menus to accomplish the same thing:
Guider->GIC
Guider->GXUI
Guider->GDV
On the CYBEX, select the console for the CASSpc.
2. Stopping the Software
2.1 Stopping the CSHELL software
Normally you can leave cshell running. At the end of the night,
run the "show motors" macro (use the button next to Quit).
Then run off cshell array power.
Go to the CSHELL XUI window and type "die"
After about 30 seconds, the XUI and IC will terminate.
Quit DV.
To kill cshell's VNC, use vnc -kill cshell N where N is the display number
2.2 Stopping the GUIDER software
Go to the Guider ic window and type "die" (anywhere in the window)
to properly close down the program.
3. Powering Down CShell
3.1 Stop the CSHELL and GUIDER sofware (section 2).
3.2 Bring up the two remote AC switches cshell1pwr and cshell2pwr
by telnet cshell1pwr and logon with the name "irtf" and the current password.
Repeat for the second switch.
cshell1pwr controls the CSHELL array, GUIDER array, and utility box.
cshell2pwr controls the casspc, cshellpc, interface box, and motor power box.
Turn off the CSHL array and VIS array using the "off N" (where N is a number).
command at the "RPC3>" prompt. The run off the CSHTL utils, CSHL motor, and CSHL intfc
in that order. The CSHELLpc and CASSpc should be left on at this point.
3.3 Casspc and cshellpc's console can be acccessed via the CYBEX. OR you can
telnet via the network.
Login to casspc as root, and type "shutdown".
Login to cshellpc as root, and type "shutdown".
Now you can power off the PCs using the cshell2pwr.
4. Powering UP Cshell
Bring up the cshell1pwr and cshell2pwr switches (section 3), and power on
the CSHELLpc and CASSpc
When the login prompt appears on the CSHELLpc (CYBEX), turn on the CSHELL utils,
from cshell1pwr, and CSHELL intfc and CSHL motor from cshell2pwr.
Start the CSHELL software (section 1.)
Do nothing for CASSPC.
Turn on power to "CSHL power" and "VIS array" from cshell1pwr.
Proceed to "Checking out CSHELL"
5. Rebooting the PCs
Turn off the power to the CSHL array and/or the VIS array from cshell1pwr.
Go to the cshell GUI and type "die" in the XUI.
Login in as root to cshellpc, and type reboot.
Restart the CSHELL software (section 1.1).
Turn on CSHL array power.
Go to the casspc console.
If the guider is running, log in remotely as "rlogin casspc -l reboot",
else just login as "reboot".
Turn on VIS array power.
Proceed to "Checking out CSHELL"
6. Checking out CSHELL
-
The CSHELL instrument software should be running (section 1).
-
Click on the Parameter of the top menu of the xui to display
the Parameters window.
-
Verify that all the motorfuctions initilaizes OK. If any
of the functions show an error, goto the setup tab and re-init the device
as necessary.
-
Go to the Parameters window, select the Observing tab
and inspect the values for VDDUC and VDET. If they are set
to -3.700 and -3.375 press Set Programmable Voltages, else correct
the voltages and continue.;
-
Set the Int Time to 1.000 sec, Coadds 01, Cycles 01,
Obs Mode Stare and AutoSaveXUI to off.
-
Take several frames by hitting Go in the xui.
In DV, you should get a fairly uniform frame with a few
counts per pixel. Setup a Stats Display type and look a buffer A.
The mean should be around 7 for the image.
Drag the mouse on the image while pressing the midde button to
get an object box of about 20x20. Move the box around by clicking
the right button around the image. Pick several "quiet" areas in to
half of the frame, and check the Std Dev in the Stats window as
you move. The value should be around 2.4 or less.
-
Select Filter: CVF Wlen/Open, select Slit: 1.0", select Shutter: Open.
Set Wavelen to 2.19085, and lastly select Cal_Lamp: Cont.
-
Take a frame, and set the box in DV to 50x50. Moving
around the top half, you should get a Mean of 220 - 250.
-
Select the Lamp: Kr and take an exposure. The Kr
line should show up around the colum 126 and have a peak value of around
700 as seen in the upper right of the frame when you move the cursor across.
If the line doesn't appear around colums 126 the slit might be off, and the
counts would also be down. Re-initialize the slit ("slitinit" then
Slit: 1.0" and re-try).
-
Next, select Direct Imaging from the DiMirror icon.
Take another image. A frame will show an image of the
slit, slightly off to the left and up with a peak count of around 1000.
The image of the slit being offset from the spectral line is normal, and
due to mirror (mis)alignment.
-
Set the Shutter: Close, DIMirror: Spectroscopic,
Slit:Blank, Filter: Blank and Lamp: Cont.
-
On the CYBEX, select the console for the CASSpc.
From the workstation, bring up the CSHELL guider ic program with the command
"rlogin casspc -l camera" with the "current" password from
an xterm. This brings up the Guider ic program, and you should
also see the gray scale bar on the bottom and the status info on the right
side of the CASSpc console now.
-
Start the guider user interface with the command "exec
gxui" in an xterm. Here, select CamMode: Continuous, then select
GO. You should get a bright image of the continuum calibration
lamp.
-
In the CSHELL XUI , select VCCD:
In. After a few cycles you should get a highly attenuated image of
the continuum lamp, showing that a neutral density filter has moved in.
Set VCCD: Out to get the bright image back.
-
In the Guider xui, select Stop, then Quit
from the menu.
-
Go to the Guider ic window and type "die" (anywhere in the window) to properly
close down the program.
-
Go back to the CSHELL Parameters window and select
Lamp: Off. If all the mechanisms are Close, Blank and Out,
select "quit" from the CSHELL xui and VF.
-
CSHELL and the Guider have now been checked out and are working nominally.
7. How to run recordtemp
ssh cshellpc -l cshell
cshell> cd current/ic
cshell> recordtemp
